In a height of only 18cm, every possible technique was used to create a highly realistic statue of Ashura. Realistic paintwork was hand-painted by craftsmen to the finest detail.
• In particular, the expressive power of the facial expressions of the Asura statues is second to none. The balance between the "beautiful boy of the Tempyo period" expression and the slender eight-headed physique has made the statue of Ashura a favorite of many. The statue's three-sided, six-armed, oddly shaped form, yet strangely coherent, was a source of outstanding beauty even during the Tenpyo period, when Buddhist art was at its height of prosperity. • Ashura, the sorrowful guardian deity. Asura was angry at the loss of his daughter, and had been in constant battle with Teishakuten, but after hearing the Buddha's teachings, he took refuge in Buddhism and became a guardian deity to protect Buddhism.
• In addition to the eight divisions that protect Shakyamuni Buddha, they are also incorporated into the twenty-eight divisions that protect the Thousand-Armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. The model statue, which is said to have been created by Empress Komyo, has a melancholy expression and a somewhat boyish innocence. The three faces all have different expressions, and it is said that the left, right, and front faces, in that order, represent the process of growth.
